May 09 Barnaul - Novosibirsk (RUS)

Met onze motoren op nieuwe Metzler banden en klaar voor de volgende 10000km, vertrokken we vandaag vanuit Barnaul richting Novosibirsk. De rit was slechts 240km, maar toch waren we blij om in Novosibirsk aan te komen. We hadden op voorhand de gemiddelde dagtemperaturen gecheckt via het internet, maar i.p.v. de normale 10°C was het slechts 3°C en een guure koude wind.

Vandaag 9 mei is "Victory day" hier in Rusland. Iedereen heeft een dagje vrij en in alle grote steden worden optochten en parades gehouden. Het geel-zwarte lintje dat iedereen heeft opgespeld en aan alle wagens hangt (ook aan Jahan's Ténéré), het symbool van "Victory day"

Today Russia is celebrating "Victory Day". Everyone has a day of and in all big cities there are parades and fireworks. The yellow-black ribbons symbolises the victory during the second world war and are seen everywhere including on Johans Bike.

Yahooooo, 2 weeks additional holiday! This is the result of the broken ferry from Russia to Korea. Originally we planned to cross from Vladivostok to Korea on the 25th of May. The ship however is still being repaired in the dry dock and will start sailing as of June 9. Great!!! We don't mind this small delay and it will give us some more time to visit Mongolia. In Irkutsk we will apply for the Mongolian visas. Fingers crossed that it is possible, otherwise we will have a long holiday in Vladivostok, waiting for the ferry.
Meanwhile we arrived in Novosibirsk. Only 240km but the ride was freezing cold and it was ...snowing! Along the road while putting on some warmer clothes, idiot Carl lost his Japanese flag. We hope it is not a bad sign.

The next days will be long with approximately 2000km to Irkutsk which we hope to reach by Thursday for the visa application. The roads are perfect, we only hope the weather changes for the better.

May 06 -08 Barnaul (RUS)

De Metzler rubbers doorstonden de zware test probleemloos. Met onze motoren zwaar beladen en iets meer dan 10000km op de teller was dit het resultaat. De wegen in Kazakstan, Kirgizië en Rusland zijn ook net iets anders dan wat we gewoon zijn in Europa.

The Metzler tires withstood the first 10.000km perfectly. Our bikes heavely loaded and roads in very bad conditions were not match for the Tourance EXP.

The Bikes were treated with brand new tires provided by Metzler. Metzler send the tires to a bike shop not far from Barnaul,where we changed them ourselves.

We also did some well deserved maintenance; changing oil and airfilter. The local Yamaha dealer in Barnaul was so friendly to help us with some tools and disposal of the old oil.

In Barnaul hadden we dus een afspraak voor een bandenwissel. Metzler stuurde 3 nieuwe sets banden naar "Bike land" een lokale verdeler, waar we zelf onze banden wisselden. We werden ook goed ontvangen bij de lokale Yamaha dealer PANAVTO in Barnaul en ook de motoren kregen een onderhoudsbeurt. De olie, oliefilter en luchtfilter werden vervangen.

Some bad points for the Yamaha's. The rear brake of Johans bike is leaking oil and one of the spokes from Carls rear wheel came loose. Lukely it did not cause any other problems. AMC will kindly send some spare parts to the Yamaha dealer in Irkutsk were we will be in a few days time. Sending the parts from Belgium goes quicker than ordering them in Russia.

Eerste tekenen van slijtage. De achterrem van Johan's Ténéré lekte olie en één van de spaken uit Carl's achterwiel was verdwenen (losgetrild). Een nieuwe spaak bestellen in Rusland bleek langer te duren dan een spaak te laten opsturen vanuit België. We contacteerden het AMC en Terence zou het nodige doen om de spaak naar Irkutsk te sturen, waar we enkele dagen later hopen te zijn.


At the local Biker cafe we had a few (read a lot) beers and listened to some live music. A good atmosphere.

May 05 Pavlodar (KZ) - Barnaul (RUS)

Today we drove from Pavlodar to Barnaul crossing the border. This time it took us only 3 hours to get through Kazakh and Russian customs and passport control. We wanted to stay in Barnaul so decided to drive the last 500 km in one go, arriving at 9pm in the city. Cold, wet and tired we checked in a good hotel to take a nice hot shower and sleep in a comfortable bed.


Vandaag zijn we van Pavlodar (in Kazakstan) naar Barnaul (in Rusland) gereden. De Russische grensovergang ging vlotter dan de voriger keer. De paspoort en douane controle nam slechts 3 uur in beslag, i.p.v. 6 uur de vorige keer. Omdat we tot in Barnaul wilden geraken, reden we de laatste 500km in een stuk door. Moe, nat en koud kwamen we rond 21h aan in Barnaul.

May 04 Pavlodar (KZ)

We zitten iets voor op schema, dus nog een rustdag in Pavlodar. Aangezien we pas maandag een afspraak in Barnaul (Rusland) hebben voor onze bandenwissel, besluiten we nog een dagje langer in Kazakstan te blijven.
We are ahead of shedule and therfore decided to have an extra day in Kazakhstan.
